    June 14th, 2025

Left Lugo at 10:10 am. Arrived Ponte de Ferreira 6:40. Miles walked 16.47.

Leaving Lugo took awhile because we had to walk all the way down the multiple roads that we climbed up to our hotel. However, we were able to see the historic wall around town, lovely shopping and saw lots of people in medieval dress walking up the hill to the square. We are missing some kind fair this weekend.

Lugo is a pretty big town with lots going on. We passed what I’m guessing is an athletic club with tennis courts, racquetball, pools and playgrounds.

    This looked and smelled amazing

The wall is actually designated UNESCO world historic site and is 3 km long.

Leaving Lugo we also passed what I would categorize as McMansions. They were up in the hills, of course. A few that looked like spec houses and a couple appeared to still be uninhabited. In my view, they were very much out of place. Luckily, we were quickly back in the rural area that we love so much.

We spent about half our walking time today on paved roads. The rest was pleasant until we got to the dreaded climbing and inevitable descents. Just when we got lulled into walking on the level, bang – there’s a giant hill to negotiate.

You may think that walking on paved roads is hard on your feet. I can confirm it is preferable to rocks and mud.

We came upon a vending machine for lunch. Not bad.

    Sandwich and chips for us.

For those of you who don’t know – I’m afraid of chickens, and birds make me break out in a cold sweat if they get close. There were chickens running free and these birds that were massive and looked quite threatening. I’m breaking into a cold sweat just remembering.

Range free chickens; bad photo as I was in a rush to get away
Clicking so loud I thought it was a woodpecker until we saw them

Snack time included rum and coke for me, coke and blue takis for Caleb. I found out a few days ago that if you ask for rum and coke, they pour rum until you ask them to stop. I’ve begun to treat it as a game of chicken. I don’t say stop til they look at me. Bad planning. I felt like Gumby after we left that place.

When you start late and stop frequently, you arrive late at your hotel. Fortunately, it doesn’t get dark here til about 11 pm.

Dinner was early (8 pm) because unlike everywhere else in Spain, this cute little hotel closes their kitchen at 8:30.

We weren’t that hungry. Our starter actually filled us up. Caleb had the pasta with meat sauce and I had the creamy squash soup. We ordered dinner mistakenly and just couldn’t finish it. We felt bad, but when you’re done, you’re done. No dessert for us.

Shot of cognac just because we felt bad not having dessert.

We’re down to the final four days. Then it’s Paris.

I’m posting this in a hurry because the wifi is very weak upstairs in my room. I’m sitting in the lounge downstairs which is close to the router.

    Good night.
