Depart Rabanal del Camino at 8:30. Arrive Ponferrada 6:50 pm. 20.3 miles.
Bad news to start the day. Not 10, but twice that. A massive miscalculation on my part. The 10 mile mark was our lunch stop.
We are bone tired. The uphill was bad, the downhill was lengthy, treacherous and painful. This is the first time I’ve been concerned about my left knee. I’ve taken some ibuprofen. And, I see vodka in my dinner plans.
Here’s what we saw and we hoped it would change

Such a weird noise. We think it was frogs.

The way up was actually quite lovely. Then it was downhill, and we were very often walking sideways because it was steep and difficult to maintain our balance.
We were lucky to have decent weather. The ferns were a nice change too.

We kept hoping the end was in sight, but the day just kept getting worse. Even as we approached the town, we got rain. It wasn’t a downpour but just enough to dampen our already low spirits.
The hotel is modern and has a restaurant. We couldn’t muster enough energy to go out so had a quiet dinner at the hotel. And what bar doesn’t have vodka?? This one. Rum and coke it is.
We are now in single digits for the end…9 days of walking left!
Not a lot of pics today. Caleb had my phone so he could listen to music.
Just putting one foot in front of the other to get through the day. Tomorrow will be better.

After your night in Ponferrada, the Camino takes you across the heart of the lush region of El Bierzo, nestled in the mountains. Take the opportunity to taste the local delicious cherries if you are travelling in Summer, exquisite cured meats and other regional delicacies. In Villafranca, known as ‘little Compostela’, visit the garden of the Iglesia de Santiago, St James Church. The church has a ‘Forgiveness Gate’, Puerta del Perdón, that only opens during Holy Years.
So says another tour! Could be a tasty day tomorrow. After a McDonald’s breakfast, that is.

You two are rocking it! Just remember, you said, if we don’t feel like it, we’ll walk less and take a bus, cab, etc. and you keep going. You are he best! And both are beasts! Almost there…..I see tears I your future,!
