July 15, day 21

Depart Sahagun at 8:40. Arrive El Burgo Ranero 3:20 pm. 12.5 miles.

Leaving Sahagun, we are about 367 km from Santiago de Compostela. We are past the half way mark.

The history of Sahagun is mostly related to the monastery which was a great teaching center during the crusades, and location of one of the many battles of Charlemagne. Although Charlemagne is closely associated to the Camino, St. James’s remains were found over a hundred years later. You can fact check me, but I think that’s right.

I had thought todays hike would be hills and valleys. Had I looked more carefully at the numbers on the elevation map, I would have seen the changes were less than 100 feet. End result, we had a pretty level walk and most of the road was lined with American sycamore trees so we had plenty of shade.

Given the fact that we had an easy walk, we took advantage of that and ambled along leisurely. Took over an hour lunch and stopped for snacks from our backpacks a couple of times as well.

They love to paint walls.

The American sycamore shaded our walk for about 8 miles of our 12+ today. Made the walk more than pleasant.

And we had more cornfields. We tried to get sprayed with errant irrigation but didn’t quite manage it.

Some of the building structures continue to impress

Not even sure what this is all about but caught my eye.

A welcome diversion. These little guys appeared out of nowhere and seemed to be unsupervised. They had collars so we assumed they had owners somewhere back in those cornfields. Once they said their hellos, they were scampering off again. What a life.

One thing I am seeing first hand is that English has clearly become the international language. I have seen Spaniards, French, Croatian, Norwegian, German, Japanese, Dutch and Americans all conversing. I have translated for people from English to Spanish to help order food, sort out rooms and purchase goods. I am so pleased to be able to help.

Grafted rose bush

We have lost our appetite tonight. A simple starter and dessert and we were done. It’s the heat. We’ll rebound tomorrow.

And for you on your trip, so many make do with so little. We donated a lot of kitchen today! Love the shade. So many long 14-15-16 miles behind your do it must be a treat to only do 12, and flat at that.
