June 28, day 4

I couldn’t be more pleased with my travel companion. Not surprising, yesterday was brutal. However, Caleb was light-hearted, humorous and so grateful to be on this journey. So proud of this young man.

For those who thought yesterday would be toughest day, (and I was one of them), they were wrong. Today was equally painful.

Stats – Roncesvalles to Lubiri – 15.26 miles, burned 1248 calories. Departed 10:25 am, arrived 6:05 pm. Late start because we wanted a map and stamp on our pilgrim passports from the pilgrim office.

Church at Roncesvalles
Waiting for the pilgrim office to open

We took several breaks as the elevation changed often and the terrain was something out of the ice age in many places.

Mossy
Looking good

I learned today that I needed to adjust my backpack up higher. Never having worn before, I was clueless. Once adjusted, my back wasn’t screaming so much.

Unplanned stop. Cows in the road

Had a video of our walk through but it won’t load! Darn. It was impressive.

A biker came through while we were considering our options. He carved a path through the cows so we quickly gathered our stuff and forged ahead in his wake.

Lovely homes
And the flowers!

Should we really be walking on this? A man came past us at great speed, practically jogging. Another man on a bicycle passed us. Do they have a death wish? I wanted to call an ambulance.

This is called dragons teeth. Aptly named

Dinner at hotel. We were too tired to walk any place else.

My thighs hurt yesterday. Today it’s shins. Caleb’s feet hurt. We are the walking dead. Can’t wait for tomorrow 😎 because we really do love this.

  1. Checking everyday to follow the journey and rooting for you guys from NC! I am so impressed you are keeping up with the blog entries, after all of the walking. The terrain looks different than the roads in North Ridge, you are doing amazing!
