    July 8th, 2023

Depart San Juan de Ortega 9:07 we’re going slowly today. Arrive Burgos 5:15 pm. 16.7 miles

If it weren’t for the wildflowers and the butterflies, we’d be lonely. San Juan de Ortega is a tiny village with 18 residents. We met two of them. Apparently the patron Saint here is known for certain miracles related to barren women. There’s more but that was in headliner.

Dinner last night was typical with the exception of our introduction to morcilla. More on this later.

Out of town through the forest and into open fields. Not many travelers on the road with us today. Talked briefly with a woman from US and her companion from Amsterdam. Didn’t ask how they knew each other but they seemed an agreeable pair.

You knew it was coming – the flowers. I did a butterfly video but it wasn’t worthy 😦

Children are the same everywhere. Nerf guns rule.

And so we trudge on to Burgos. It is quite a large town and outskirts are mainly industrial. We spent a good 6 miles walking along the highway with views of PepsiCo, Bridgestone, Goodyear (yes we smelled the rubber), many furniture manufacturers and countless others that I had no idea what they were. It felt endless.

    Entering old town

Once we got into the older part of town it felt more like Spain we have been wandering through. Found our hotel and out for a late dinner at a nice restaurant that offered pizza and burgers plus our new favorite – morcilla. It’s a type of black pudding and is a specialty of this area. It’s mostly rice, onion and spices. The pork blood is what makes it dark. Leftover pizza has been packaged to go for lunch tomorrow.

Turning in to watch a movie til I can’t stay awake any longer. That should take about 5 minutes 😴😴

Final thought for the day – blisters, backpack and beer. The first two are top of mind because they are painful. Beer makes it better🍺. I’ve had more beer in the last two weeks than I’ve had all year. When you’re hot and tired, a cold beer is a lifesaver.
