    July 16th, 2023

Left El Burgo Ranero at 8:55. Arrive Mansilla de las Mulas at 1:35 pm. 12.3 miles.

Similar to yesterday, we had the shade of the sycamore trees available to us. However, because it’s Sunday there were almost no cars on the road running adjacent to the pilgrim path. Those darn pebbles and gravel just play havoc with your feet, so we opted to walk on the road to save our feet, and the sun wasn’t really out yet so the shade offered wasn’t as enticing as a paved road.

That changed after lunch. The cars came out and it didn’t seem worth it to worry about jumping into the ditch if we had to. That being said, we made great time in the morning as we had very little to stop us from walking at a speedy pace. Some other travelers figured it out too.

At lunch we discovered that Australians are just as loud as Americans, only with a charming accent. Discovered I don’t like the chatter any better than loud young American males. Sorry to offend, but my peaceful state of mind gets cranky with boorish noise.

    Must add stones

One of the many monuments along the way

This is a little reminder of why it’s important to remember the journey. When you see a rock pile started you need to add your own rock – symbolizing leaving your worries behind. You can also throw one behind you to acknowledge your journey.

We’ve got company. There was an electric fence to keep them from coming on the road, fortunately, because they were quite close.

    Where we had lunch

Caleb’s first visit to a laundromat. Not a highlight. But we have clean clothes.

What a great dinner. Sorry no pics. Caleb had spaghetti, followed by chicken cordon bleu. I had peach and goat cheese salad and hake (fish) with fresh tomatoes. We both finished with a lemon cream. I did get a pic of my bourbon. I know what’s important. 😎

Tomorrow we head to Leon, a big city. Need to find a pharmacy to replenish tape for my feet. Blisters continue to be a part of our daily life.
