    July 27th, 2023

Left Portomarin at 8:40.Arrived Palas de Rei at 2:30. 15.9 miles.

Caleb is in a hurry. He set a punishing pace this morning. We were nearly 10 miles into the walk before we stopped for lunch. Mercifully, he slowed down after lunch.

We are still in the midst of young people. There is now another group – Japanese young adults, accompanied by two nuns. Needless to say, we understand nothing of what they are saying.

Leaving Portomarin, that bridge doesn’t look very stable. Lots of open space and lovely views in the distance. Hard to capture with an iPhone (for me anyway).

Note the mist. We are still at about 1200 feet elevation. We will climb to 2100, then end the day at 1800 feet.

Lots of kids. We decided that we actually do like the company. They are chatting amongst themselves so there is little opportunity to join in. I could do it, but Caleb seems a bit shy about joining in so I’ve let it go. He’s having enough fun watching the young ladies, of which there are many!

And they break into song regularly. It is such a pleasure to see the joy they seem to have in endless supply. We will miss the spirited conversation and laughter.

We eventually found a place that wasn’t too crowded for lunch. We had ox burgers, which I ordered by mistake. They were delicious. The owner decided we needed a pick me up before we headed out, so he treated us to an ice cold coffee liqueur shot. That got our heart racing, and off we went. Got to love the Spanish 💕

It wouldn’t be a daily post if I didn’t find some lovely flowers. The dahlias in particular were spectacular.

As we enter Palas de Rei.

The endless farming equipment and cows
    Still standing
Caleb leaves me in his dust again.

The name of the village dates back to a king’s palace that disappeared long ago. Apparently, it was a Vizigothic king from the 700s but I didn’t see reference to when that happened or who the king was so I guess he was pretty insignificant historically to the Spaniards.

We are nearing the end of our journey and I can’t help but wonder whether Caleb realizes just how extraordinary an adventure this is. I believe he does, as he has made a few comments in passing. This could be a conversation for tomorrow.

I know I have changed for the better in that I am more tolerant of situations that are not what I expected. I need less stuff. I want less stuff. I want to travel more, but not for at least a month 🙂

I also need to eat less bread when I get home. I have eaten more bread in the last six weeks than I’ve had in the last year. 🥖🥖🥖 And potatoes too😎

Took a walk in the small town square before dinner. Ran into our Australian friend and had a quick drink with her. She’s been traveling alone for two months now. Will be back in Sydney some time on the next couple of months. Financial planner on the go. She makes “working remotely” take on a whole new meaning.

A couple of quick photos from the square.

    No idea what this is
Just another statue. Had no ID as to who he is. Possibly St James
