June 4

Lots of flights and buses and trams and walking. Suffice to say, we arrived at our hotel safe and without incident.

A word of warning, when you land in Paris (CDG) and you have a connection to Barcelona on Vueling Airlines – be prepared. Three different terminals, another two times through security, once through customs, two bus rides and a train – and now three plus hours later you get to your connection in time to board! And we’ve been awake for about 24 hours.

Just a quick idea of the countryside

The bus ride from Asturias airport to Oviedo was lovely. Then just a 17 minute walk to our hotel; we are pumped to have arrived. Nobody can dampen our spirit. It feels like we’ve already accomplished so much and we haven’t even started The Camino.

A couple hours for a nap and it’s off to dinner. We found a great little place just a block from our hotel. Of course, no place opens for dinner til 8:30, so we had time to relax and shower before heading out.

You had me at “meat”
Smash burger for Caleb
Prime steak for me
Smashed artichokes to start. Tastes better than it looks
Creamy who knows what dessert and a chocolate torte and Bailey’s for dessert
Wine selection

Then a quick walk back to hotel to get a decent nights sleep.

Outdoor dining up the street
Local art
Off the hotel lobby

Our first day was an exercise in resilience and putting one foot in front of the other to reach our destination.

Tomorrow we begin the Primitivo route. Good night.

As always, Caleb has proved a worthy travel companion – no complaining and a willingness to keep moving. I couldn’t ask for more.

A quick note about the locals – while I do speak Spanish, I’m finding it challenging to understand them. However, I have experienced nothing but patience and kindness on their part to help me understand. it’s very humbling.
