July 18, day 24

Left Leon at 8:55. Arrived around 4:20 in Mazarife, 15.4 miles. But an unclear direction from tour operator left us looking for a hotel that did not exist in Mazarife. Eventually I called the number provided for assistance and the owners of the hotel came to get us. It is in Villante, about 10 miles away. We were in lovely rooms by 5:50.

Those of you who know me well will be stunned that I missed posting this yesterday. On the way into Leon, we passed (see below)

The Spanish version of Home Depot. I swear my heart skipped a beat.

Also from yesterday, just before Brico Depot, such a pretty display in an industrial part of town.

Time to say good bye to Leon. It was fun. So big, they have mini tour buses 😂 down the center of town

Lovely balconies

Some impressive architecture

Now it’s hotel
I think that’s St. Isabels

Lots of churches in Leon.

It took us over an hour and a half to get out of Leon, it’s just a big place. We did, however, make a quick stop at a park where we got sight of a peacock wandering loose. See last pic. Hard to see him but didn’t want to get too close in case he got spooked. Wish he’d have opened his feathers 😦

Stopped at a very modern albergue for lunch about half way to Mazarife. Shared ceviche and ham/cheese sandwich. Very satisfying.

Didn’t taste a lot of fish, was more like salsa, but so fresh and delicious that we didn’t mind at all.

The afternoon was hot and short on views. It was desolate and desert-like. The few wildflowers were sad and prickly. Not much to look at. Did I mention it was hot?

Finally at Villante. The place we are staying is a lovely oasis surrounded by sunflowers and a beautiful river. View from my balcony –

Met a nice couple from Wisconsin at dinner. They’re both middle school teachers. It was great to hear about their lives and all of their travels. Given their profession, they were very good with Caleb – including him in the conversation about things he would know about. All in all, a super time tonight.

  1. The hardware Home Depot reminds me of the one along the river Seine in Paris, where our houseboat was. And those nice guys who were delivering us were saying are you sure this is the right place this doesn’t look like where are you should be this doesn’t look safe. They were very sweet and of course it was the right place and it was perfect.
I know it’s really hot there and when you’re just walking and walking like that it’s really hard but I know you’re happy and I know you’re both really enjoying it. Keep up the good walk. Love from Susan and jean
