July 9, day 15

Depart Burgos 9:20. Arrive 4:45 at hotel in Hornillos del Camino. 14.9 miles.

I have a system. Each day I take a picture of our route from a larger elevation map we got at the pilgrim center in Saint Jean de Pied de Port, and a snap from our itinerary showing our hotel name. This has proved invaluable at the end of the day when we’re not in the best of shape and need to find our hotel.

Also shows estimated distance

Today looks like a shorter day and not much change in elevation. Sadly, we have found the elevation visual to be grossly misleading. There are always hills to climb and descend.

Breakfast at hotel. So much from which to choose. Coffee was particularly good for a machine.

Short day turned longer, missed a marker, added another mile at least.

The cathedral at Burgos – magnificent

These markers are all very unique. Reminds me of the painted cows and horses in certain US cities. Same idea.

And what about these sculptures, metal works. So interesting

For lunch, leftover pizza and a seafood pincho for me. My choice was tasty and just enough.

Stopping for a snack. Caleb is getting stronger every day.💪💪

We keep looking for fish but rarely see them. I suspect Caleb is using this as a reason to have a little break. I have no quarrel with this; he thinks he’s being sneaky but I’m on to him.

The countryside his proved to be pretty bland today. Lots of rolling hills with wheat and poppies. It goes for miles. And while it is lovely, it doesn’t change too much.

Consequently, you’re getting local art walls from a couple of villages we passed through. I have no explanation for the second one.

Can’t go 10 miles without passing a church. As today is Sunday, the bells are ringing even more than usual.

Speaking Spanish has been really helpful. I’ve had to ask for directions more than I thought I would. Caleb is picking up a bit here and there and can pretty much figure out a menu now. So pleased.

Our hotel is also an albergue. One building is a hostel, and one building with private rooms.

I mention this because I was offered the option of hand washing clothes in the sink located in a patio, which presumably is common for albergues.

As I brought washing soap, I took her up in this. Air drying clothes is something I haven’t done since I was a kid. Brought back some memories.

They were dry by the time we finished dinner. No doubt we’ll find a laundromat tomorrow.

Todays b-word is bicycle. When we started this trip I felt sorry for those people doing the Camino by bike. The terrain was so unpredictable and scary. Being on foot was no treat, but on a bike seemed impossible.

I now no longer feel sorry for them, I’m envious, as they get to places much faster than us. I have yet to understand the outfits, however. Let’s be honest, there are few men that can actually pull off that look. Today we saw a man in a unitard. I can only shake my head. Or as my daughter would say, “Are there no mirrors in his house?”

  1. Regarding your daughters remark, and question, we always say, “did they not look in the mirror before they left house?”
I love this little stories you tell every day. My guess about Einstein and Gandhi and Mandela is were they not all Nobel prize winners? Anyway, we’re still very very proud of you every day and will send you a message tomorrow. Are lots of people communicating with you, I sure hope so. Susan and Jean.
